Five Types of Tents and Their Properties

A tent provides one of the most basic needs in life, which is shelter. Tents have been first recorded and used since as early as the Iron Age, and they have been prominent to humans for a long time. Tents are often a symbol of celebration. When you see a tent, you know something interesting is about to take place. Tents are used in weddings and community events to commencement ceremonies and corporate functions, to even camping out in natural settings over the holidays.

Just as there are many occasions that require a tent, there are various types of tents that serve different demands of the individual. But how do you know which one to choose? It’s most important to consider the specific event. How many guests must you accommodate? What look and feel are you trying to achieve? And what will best complement the venue? 

Here are a few types of tents and their properties that you need to know about: –

 

1. Frame Tents

  • Frame Tents are special as they have no interior support poles to obstruct views or table layouts. 
  • Frame tents are suitable for maximizing the space within the tent, especially for seated guests who will want to be able to see all the action. 
  • However, the frame is visible on the inside ceiling of the tent. 
  • There are certain frame tents that feature a variety of designs on the end to create an entrance way with a more glamorous vibe.
  • Frame tends tend to be heavier and more difficult to set up than other modern tents, but the durability and structural integrity it offers are the reasons why it is still used.
  • The rigid framework of straight poles is generally made of steel and come with angled joints. 
  • The tent offers plenty of space including good headroom. 
  • It is also stable when properly pitched.
  • This type of tent is suitable for functions like weddings and celebration events, but it is also suitable for camping outdoors as well.

 

 

2. Dome Tent

  • As its name suggests, dome tent is shaped like a dome.
  • Dome tents come in many different sizes with a simple structure. 
  • Dome tents can fit in from two campers to even six or nine campers, hence why they are popular among campers
  • This style of tent is easy to set up and has quite a high center point which gives you a decent amount of room and headspace. 
  • The rounded edges enable the tent to shed water and rain,and avoids build up on the top. 
  • Some dome tents have an entrance in front of the door that acts as a makeshift mudroom to keep dirt and muddy gear dry and out of the tent.
  • This type of tent is considered free-standing as its structural integrity will be settled with heavy rains or gusts of wind. 
  • Dome tent is lighter in weight, easy to pitch and has a decent amount of headroom for its campers.

 

 

3. Transition Tents

  • Transition Tents are most commonly used in weddings to create an entrance to the main tent. 
  • Transition tents come with a Marquee style tent that is long and narrow
  • Transition tents create an elegant walkway that builds excitement as guests head towards the reception. 
  • Another common style of transition tent is a 10 foot-wide Vista tent that is square in shape instead of a rectangular. 
  • This creates an entrance way or gathering space as compared to a walkway which enables guests to gather in a smaller space before entering the larger reception tent.

 

 

4. Backpacking Tent

  • If you are the type of outdoorsman who enjoys going on long distance trek, then it is usually ideal for you to find an ultralight tent that can easily withstand all types of weather climates.
  • Backpacking tents are typically smaller in size, lightweight, and very durable. 
  • This type of tents are not as expensive; however, the materials for backpacking tents are typically high quality which has a direct effect on pricing.
  • Usually, backpacking tents have a lower profile than other tents and are designed for 1 or 2 people. 
  • After all, if you’re planning on hiking through long distances, the last thing you want is to carry around a heavy cumbersome tent. 
  • With its low profile design and durable materials, backpacking tents are better suited for anything and everything that mother nature throws at them.

 

 

5. Sailcloth Tents

  • Sailcloth tents are both fun and festive, and are very suitable for holding parties or weddings.
  • When you see this type of tent from a distance, the tent looks like it is floating on air. 
  • The crisp, clean lines of a sailcloth mixed with its light-weight, bright white fabric gives the guests a feeling that they are floating under a parachute. 
  • At night, different styles and colors of lighting can create a completely special look that ranges from romantic fairytale to high-energy dance party.

 

In a nutshell, one should not choose tents based on popularity or affordability. You should always take the occasion in which the tents are used in consideration in order to determine the protection, comfort and shelter of your tent function.
