Here are some helpful camping hacks to take along for the weekend. These camping tips and tricks are not just creative, but they’re also very easy to implement. What’s best of all is that many of them will conserve you space, time, weight, and money.

1. Use your Pillowcase and your Clothes to Create your own Pillow

Space is always a problem when it comes to camping. Instead of packing an extra pillow, why not try and turn your clothes and a pillowcase into a pillow instead. The pillowcase makes a great substitute as an extra bag as well.

2. Try using Doritos as Kindling

It can be troubling when you are not able to start a fire for your campfire. Instead of continuing your efforts to start a fire on the kindling you got from the forest, why not use dorito chips as fire starter instead. These dense and oily corn chips are easy to light on fire, and they will surely last you for a long time, thus making them the perfect kindling for starting a fire. In addition, doritos double as an emergency snack if you are craving for something to snack on.

3. Crack Eggs Ahead of Time and Store Them in a Water Bottle for an Easy Breakfast

Bringing eggs on a camping trip is a risky business. In the event that they crack, you will lose the eggs and have a mess to deal with as well.

Try this campfire cooking hack instead. Crack eggs before you go off camping and store them in a water bottle. You can do this in many different ways. If you know everyone prefer scrambled eggs for meals, then you can whip the eggs and then store them in a large water bottle, you can even add milk, cheese, and seasonings if you prefer.

If you happen to have a water bottle with a slightly larger opening, you could also gently crack eggs into it for fried eggs with intact yolks. Take several bottles for different meals, or use a larger bottle to pour repeatedly.

Make sure to store these in your cooler so they won’t spoil, and enjoy the ease of not toting fragile eggshells with you.

4. Burn Sages to Repel Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes can ruin a camping experience. It is important to know how to repel them, even without covering yourself in hazardous levels of bug repellent, is a great skill to have when you are out camping.

Bring along a few bundles of sage when you go out camping next time. When the sun is setting and the campfire is going, burn a bit of sage with your fire. But if you are going for a longer-lasting effect, set the sage on fire and let it smolder and smoke by the edge of the campfire. Mosquitoes are naturally repelled by sage smoke, so you’ll find a lot less of them buzzing around you.

Keep in mind that mosquitoes, despite their presence may be felt at all times of day, are usually most active at dawn and dusk. Therefore it is best to be prepared by having some burning sage ready at those times.

5. Plan Ahead and Keep a Checklist

Checklists are very important necessities when it comes to all the packing, unpacking, and repacking for a camping trip. Prepare a checklist ahead of time and deciding what should go in which bags. A checklist can make sure you don’t forget those important items like lighters or cookware that can make or break a great camping trip.

6. Bring Microfiber Towels

If you are carrying your own equipment, weight can also be a problem for camping. Microfiber towels are lightweight and more absorbent than normal towels. If you are concerned about the weight, microfiber towels are also quick drying, which means you won’t have to worry about growing mold once they’re packed. Using microfiber towels in place of paper towels to reduce waste, which is also better for the environment.

7. Prepare Your Meals at Home Beforehand

By preparing your meals before you leave on your trip, you can reduce cooking time and the resulting mess. If you know you will need to cut up ingredients for a meal, try chopping them beforehand instead.
